September 15, 2024: Preorder THE INCANDESCENT now!

My next book, THE INCANDESCENT, is now available to preorder. (Here’s an Amazon link; here’s Barnes & Noble; here’s Waterstones!)

Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series meets Plain Bad Heroines in this sapphic dark academia fantasy by instant national and international bestselling author Emily Tesh, winner of the Hugo and World Fantasy Awards.

“Look at you, eating magic like you’re one of us.”

Doctor Walden is the Director of Magic at Chetwood Academy and one of the most powerful magicians in England. Her days consist of meetings, teaching A-Level Invocation to four talented, chaotic sixth formers, more meetings, and securing the school’s boundaries from demonic incursions.

Walden is good at her job―no, Walden is great at her job. But demons are masters of manipulation. It’s her responsibility to keep her school with its six hundred students and centuries-old legacy safe. And it’s possible the entity Walden most needs to keep her school safe from―is herself.

I’m proud of this one, and I think – I hope! – that all of you will enjoy it. Here I am talking about it on Bluesky:

Preorders should now be available nearly everywhere for THE INCANDESCENT, coming in Spring 2025!This is a book about money and education and status symbols, about loving your career, about demons, about magic, about fantasy school – but most of all about how 'school' is always a kind of fantasy.

Please do preorder it if you can; it makes all the difference to an author!

September 15, 2024: The Hugo Award

It’s been nearly a month and I have been very behind in updating my website, but I’m delighted to note here that SOME DESPERATE GLORY won the Hugo Award for Best Novel at Glasgow Worldcon in August. You can read more about the event, including a transcript of my acceptance speech, here.

May 15, 2024: Locus and Arthur C. Clarke nominations for SOME DESPERATE GLORY

You may have already heard that SOME DESPERATE GLORY is a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Novel. I’m delighted to say that the book has also been nominated for the Locus Award in the First Novel category, as well as joining the immensely strong shortlist for this year’s Arthur C. Clarke Award. I’m obviously tremendously pleased and very grateful to the Locus voters and the Clarke judges.

I won’t be able to make it to Oakland in person for the Locus Awards ceremony next month, but I am looking forward to the Clarke Awards in London in July!
